I’m thinking of getting bangs, but I don’t know which style works best for my face. What should I know before going to the salon?

“Before heading to the salon, always bring a photo with you to use as a reference,” says New York City celebrity stylist Lynne Schilling, who recently did hair on Lifetime’s “24 Hour Catwalk” with judges Cynthia Rowley and Alexa Chung. She also suggests that you ask your stylist to cut your bangs when they’re dry since hair is 20 percent longer when it’s wet. “Most importantly, know which type of bangs would compliment your face,” says Schilling.

1. Short bangs. These need a small amount of product and go well with a “bob” hairstyle. These are best for oval-shaped faces that can wear practically any type of bangs.

2. Medium bangs. Side-swept bangs at medium length are perfect for women who often wear ponytails. If you have a heart-shaped visage, this length’s for you.

3. Long bangs. These work best with a textured tip, and they are highly recommended for faces that have large foreheads or are either square or round.
