If you’ve been to the National Puerto Rican Day Parade, you know that the fun doesn’t end with the parade. This month, share Boricua pride wherever you’re celebrating, and spice things up with these fun ideas.
1. Dance Party Possibly the fastest way to amp up el ambiente is to play Bomba y Plena classics, or dance hits from Puerto Rican greats such as Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin. Or, spin Puertorriqueño salseros such as Héctor Lavoe or El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico.
2. Heritage Juegos Organize a Puerto Rican history trivia quiz that teaches facts about Taínos (the island’s natives), the arrival of Africans and Europeans, and the mestizaje, or mixing of cultures.
3. Traje Folclórico Take a cue from parade participants wearing traditional garments by giving out straw hats for the men and fresh flowers for women’s hair as worn by jibaros or country folk.
